About my Rabbitry

HOUSING
My rabbits are housed in wooded hutches that are  made by my friend. My rabbits are housed outdoors so they need a hutch that is very sturdy and weather proof. The hutches are built out of 1/2 inch plywood and 2x4's. These wooden hutches are 8 feet long and 3 feet wide and is a double hutch for holding 2 rabbits. Giving each rabbit a 4 feet long and 3 feet wide cage to its self. We put rolled roofing on the roof top of each hutch, the roof of the hutch is a complete sheet of plywood.

All the wire on the hutches  is 1inch x 1/2 inch, to keep rodents out. There is 4 feet between the ground and the bottom wire of the hutch that makes it harder for the preditors to get the rabbits feet. These hutches are very very heavy and it would be extremely hard for a dog or such to knock the hutch over. Every evening the rabbit hutche's fronts are covered with a tarp. These hutches cost me $185 to make, that includes latches, wire, rolled roofing ect..Then it takes my friend & I a whole day to build it. So now you, add a 8+ hour day of your time to the price.

Inside the Hutch
All my rabbits have everything they need to stay happy inside their hutch. Inside of every rabbits cage they have :

A resting board (piece of plywood) also a mighty mat to sit on where they eat.

They have 2 toys, a rolling ball with a bell in it and a plastic ring that has plastic keys on it. The rabbits really enjoy picking up their key ring and tossing them. All the plastic toys in their cages are extremely hard plastic they can not chew it a apart.

They also have hay racks in each cage, this saves the hay from falling thru the wire floor and it being wasted.

How I feed my Rabbits
I am very picky on what my rabbits eat. They get the highest quality of everything possible and I try to buy everything from my grain mix ingredients to the fresh fruit and veggies organically the less chemicals the better! I only feed high quality hay.
Which includes grass hay, orchard grass and oat hay.

My rabbits are fed twice a day, every 12 hours. They get fed at 7:30am and 7:30pm. Every morning the rabbits get a get 1/4 cup of my grain mix. The grain mix goes into its own little metal tin bowl hooked in the cages.

When my rabbits are fed in the evening they get a fresh veggie slice, large handful of hay and another 1/4 cup of my  secret grain mix. It's no secret any longer though...I share this recipe as I want see healthy, happy and well fed rabbits for everyone.

I like to feed the following fruits and veggies to my rabbits.

FRUITS:  pears all kinds, apples, strawberrys, blackberrys, raseberrys, watermelon, cantelope, asian pears, peaches, pineapple, bananas and oranges. I make sure my rabbits always have a orange slice once a week, I believe this helps their coats stay shinny and it gives their immune system a good dosing of Vitman C.

VEGGIES: For my veggies that I feed my rabbits there are only 3 main veggies I rotate with, and they are cucumbers, carrots & tops and celery. I allow each rabbit to have a whole carrot and only a slice of the celery & cucumber because they are a "watery" veggie and to much of a watery veggie can upset the rabbits digestive system and give the rabbit diahhrea. For an example a 1 celery stick gets cut up into 3 pieces.

Chews:
Well, I give my rabbits apples branches to chew on. We usaully have apple logs so they can chew & play with it at the same time. No matter what I put in there for them to chew on, they always rather chew on their hutch. When this happens I find the Hottest Hot sauce and put it where they are chewing, sometimes it works and other times the hot sauce is yummy and makes the chewing even tastier.

Rabbit Pellets I Feed

I like to feed Pfaus pellets for rabbits, this feed is a 18% protien. I have had good luck with this pellet. My rabbits are free-fed on the pellets.

Before I switched to Pfuas I was feeding the Purina Professional formula. My sister was feeding the Purina show before she switched, we had good luck with these feeds. But when Pfaus came to town it won us.

I am just Thrilled about my rabbit shed being insulated. This is a big step for me, now I can have more then one litter in the winter months. Before, I had an exstension cord for one heat lamp. Now, I have a light switch and 2 plug-ins. The shed will be much cooler in the summer months. CHECK OUT the before and now photo's of my shed!

Disinfecting/Sanitation:
My favorite cleaning solution is Vanodine. This is a truly amazing solution, it has many uses from disinfecting to sterlizing drinking water. I just love the stuff sooooo many uses. All cages/hutches are cleaned with the Vanodine. Then they are washed down with vinegar to help de-orderize.

When filling my cage trays & carrying cages with wood shavings, I only use fir shavings. I have heard that cedar shavings and the ammonia in the urine can cause a bad reaction and may harm the rabbits. So, I just aviod the situation. Each tray is ALWAYS lined with news paper, this helps absorb urine.

Stretching Limits Grain Mix Recipe
1- Part Rye Flakes
1- Part Wheat Flakes
1- Part Un-shelled Raw Sunflower Seeds
(no shells on sunflower seed)
1- Part Barley Flakes or Rolled Barley
4- Parts Rolled Oats
2- Parts Crushed Organic Cornflakes

My grain mix contains many ingredients (unshelled raw sunflower seeds, organic Honey'd corn flakes, rye flakes, wheat flakes, thick cut rolled oats, rolled barely or Barley Flakes).

My rabbits LOVE their grain mix. I have found my grain mix to be the best thing to keep weight on rabbits and healthy shinny coats. My English Lops get 1/4 cup of grain mix at each feeding which is twice a day in the AM and PM.

So, when you stop and think about it, 1 rabbit eats 1/2 cup (1/4 in the AM & PM) of grain mix a day that is 3 1/2 cups of grain mix per a week per an E-Lop. But, just think how the rabbits would look if they did not get that extra special grain mix to keep their body weight. By just feeding them some grain mix will help them gain a pound or two they need to get rid of that boney feeling. The one thing I can say is "My rabbits are ALWAYS in perfect flesh condition"

** When I raised Flemish Giants they got the same amount of grain mix as my E-lops did and they did perfect with that amount **

All Age groups get the same amount. An 8 week old E-lop will eat as much as an adult E-lop which is 1/4 cup twice a day. It's crazy to think they all eat the same amount. My little E-lops will eat it up.

IN THE WINTER
My rabbit hutches are stuffed full of hay and oat hay. With the English Lops, their big long ears drag on the cold wire floor of their cages. So, that is why I stuff lots of hay on the floor wire. I only keep the rabbits "poop Corner" free of hay. This also allows my rabbits to have less air movement in the hutch, everynight the rabbit hutches are covered up in the front with a tarp.

In the above photo you can see an example of what the hutches look like in the winter. Modeling her home is Mazie.

Below is a photo of the rabbit hutches in our big snow storm we had Jan.08, The photo is looking off our back deck at the rabbitry. Notice all the hutches are tarped from the cold weather.
